The Art of Tarot Card Reading

By: Jackson Swift

Tarot card reading is a powerful and magical practice that is also an art. It requires highlights, and develops both abilities of intuition and psychic. Moreover, it has a rich historical background.

The tarot reading has been around since timely memorial. It is not exactly known when and where. Others believe that in the 15th century, it came from Northern Italy. Tarot was originally used for games, like the conventional playing cards nowadays; however it eventually developed as a divination tool. Tarot card used to be utilized for a card game similar to bridge. The game spread, reaching other countries, and developing variations of pictures. Eventually, the tarot reaches the members of European occult arts. They regarded the tarot card as mystical. Their fascination helped the tarot’s progress as a divination utility.

It has come a long way since then that even the famous psychologist Carl Jung recommended tarot reading to analyze the unconscious.

How Tarot Card Works:

Usually, the type of tarot card deck is dependent on the reader. The conventional deck consists of 78 cards, and then it is separated into two categories—the Major and Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards symbolizing human nature’s universal pattern. The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards and divided into Wands, Swords, Cups, and Pentacles representing energy and other fields from the activities of everyday life.

Tarot cards come in different sizes as well as different artwork on their back and/or front. The meaning or the message, of course, remains unchanged.
Tarot reading is utilized for planning safe spells, primary medium for spells, and when done conventionally, the reading will help put a lot in perspective. A tarot reading is started with a question and it often answers with a past or future, or even present position, shedding light to the path that needs to be taken.

Benefits:
Tarot card reading can help an understanding of a spiritual world; it can also help understand one’s own thoughts. Whether it’s realizing unwelcome patterns in life or just a boost to make an important decision, tarot reading can help understand oneself.

Tarot Reading: Reversed Cards

It is not uncommon to find reversed cards when spreading during a tarot reading. There is a way to avoid or encourage reversed cards when shuffling. To avoid it, start by fixing the cards so they all face the same direction. Be mindful of this direction before dividing your deck to shuffle.

If, on the other hand, you would want to introduce reversed cards, divide the deck before the shuffle and rotate one of the piles upside-down (180 degrees). You can also use the scrambling method. Shuffling them around in different directions can result in reversed cards.

Interpreting reversed cards is often reserved for the more advanced tarot readers. Some tarot readers interpret it as the opposite of the upright card. Some readers take a more complicated approach and base the meaning on the surrounding cards. Other readers take the reversed card as a more intense variation of the upright counterpart.

For most tarot readers, reversed cards can mean a blockage or a deficiency which needs to be resolved. For positive cards, it can mean there is something stopping the querent from achieving the positive goal. For negative cards, it accentuates the situation and may mean that it is more harmful.

A reversed tarot card may represent an aspect in the querent’s life that is not yet fully developed or is incomplete. Unlike the upright card that may easily manifest its qualities, a reversed card is not completely expressed.

A tarot reader must be careful with interpreting a reversed card as something undesirable. It is not negative in and of itself. It can mean various things. Developing your tarot reading experience can lead to a better understanding of reversed tarot cards.
